Commonwealth Games Volunteer
Year 9 student Lachlan Woodforth was amongst the first Commonwealth
Games junior volunteers. Lachlan is a Brisbane representative squash player so this
experience was particularly beneficial.
Lachlan worked 11 of the 12 days that squash was played, in his role
as a ‘Sport Competition Team Member’. He worked courtside
with the Commonwealth Games athletes, carrying their bags into matches, cleaning
the ball and court during matches, ensuring the athletes had everything that
they needed and assisted to prepare the courts at the beginning and end of the
days. Lachlan also experienced being courtside for the medal ceremonies and managing
to have a hit on the Commonwealth Games show court.
During
his time volunteering, Lachlan assisted athletes from all the participating
countries. He particularly enjoyed meeting and chatting to and having photos
with Nick Matthew and James Willstrop from England (who won the Men’s Singles Gold
medal and the Men’s Doubles Bronze medal) Lachlan has also been coached by Zac
Alexander (Australia) who won the Gold medal in the Men’s Doubles.
