The Japanese EDGE Program offered at Mount Gravatt High is a selective entry program open to students entering Year 7. Japanese EDGE is one of the Junior Secondary signature programs offered at Mount Gravatt High and entry in to the Japanese EDGE cohort is merit based.
The aim of the Japanese EDGE Program is to provide extensive opportunities for students to develop and gain confidence in their Japanese language knowledge, skills and abilities as well as broaden their cultural awareness.
Students in the Japanese EDGE program experience an engaging curriculum that delivers strong foundations and opportunities for a diverse range of language learners to extend their comprehension and improve their communication abilities. Students are enriched through teaching and learning experiences and enjoy additional extension opportunities.
- Participation in and leadership of cultural workshops, including the Obento lunch
- Engagement with cultural texts and recreation of Japanese folktales such as Momotaro Peach Boy
- Participation in language competitions such as the MLTAQ Japanese Speech Contest and Global Online Language Championships run by Education Perfect
- Enjoyable incursions and cultural workshops such as our Japanese Obento lunch
- Communication with sister school, Shiojiri High School
- Development of script proficiency in Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji
- Opportunities to develop speaking and comprehension skills
- Support to achieve international certifications such as Kanji Kentei test
Candidates must have also studied Japanese in primary school or be able to speak Japanese.
